The City of Urbana is a Mayor-Council form of government:
Mayor-Council Government: In this form of government, the mayor is elected separately from the council and has strong or weak powers based on the municipal charter. This structure is most common in the largest cities in the U.S.

Urbana was founded in 1833 and is the county seat of Champaign County. The City is governed by the Mayor and City Council with the assistance of various departments, agencies and commissions.
