Champaign and Urbana Police News

Urbana's Police Department met with residents to hear concerns and get input from the community about improving relations. From the News-Gazette today:
Police, Urbana residents, officials talk areas for improvement
A crowd of almost 40 gathered Wednesday night in the Urbana Civic Center to discuss police-community relations throughout the city.

Among the audience were Urbana government and police officials, educators and residents. The discussion, arranged by the city, was led by community-relations specialist Preston James.

One commonly made recommendation during the talk was a request for police officers to engage with the community on a day-to-day basis and become known more as a person than a badge.

Bryant Seraphin, who will be Urbana's interim police chief after Chief Sylvia Morgan retires this month, said his department follows a community policing model. But he noted that occasional low staffing levels can keep officers from that work.

Champaign Police put out information on how to safely and legally surrender unwanted or non-functional old firearms on their facebook page:
Curious about disposing your unwanted or broken firearms? You may contact the non-emergency number at 217-333-8911 and arrange to voluntarily surrender your firearm at our department or you can stop by. We ask you to keep the unloaded weapon inside of a case located in the trunk or rear of your vehicle.

Please do not bring any weapons into the police station.

When you arrive, speak with one of our Police Service Representatives in our lobby and an officer will assist you in retrieving the weapon from your vehicle.
