The Champaign City Council voted Tuesday to comply with a new state law — the Small Wireless Facilities Deployment Act — about accommodating upcoming 5G networks for mobile internet connectivity.

As the successor to 4G networks, 5G boasts faster connections and download speeds for devices like computers, cellphones and tablets. Tuesday's unanimous council vote allows for small wireless facilities, which will transmit 5G data and wireless communication, to sit in the public right of way.

In other business Tuesday, council members also approved funding for the CommUnity Matters program for the upcoming fiscal year: $36,835 will go to the Champaign Park District, $48,000 to the Unit 4 school district, $10,000 to the Don Moyer Boys and Girls Club, $10,000 to the DREAAM Opportunity Center and $20,000 to Life Line Champaign Inc.
